Rookie Jeff Tuel and free-agent addition Matt Flynn split the first-team reps. Starting quarterback EJ Manuel remains out for the next game with a knee injury.
The Bills (3-5) have lost three of four in preparing to host the Chiefs (8-0).
Lewis continued playing despite being hurt on the first play from scrimmage in a 35-17 loss at New Orleans on Sunday. Lewis had taken off on a run up the left side, when linebacker David Hawthorne struck the quarterback with a helmet-first hit into the right ribs. Lewis fumbled the ball and had difficulty getting off the field.
ALLEN SETTLING IN
The Seahawks expressed interest, as did the Broncos. Ultimately, nothing developed and Jared Allen is still with the Minnesota Vikings. Allen said Wednesday that he was open to a trade, but he’s not disappointed to be in Minnesota, despite their obvious struggles.
“As a matter of fact, I take it as a sign of respect that they still think that I have value,” Allen said, according to USA Today. “But I’m excited to be a Viking. I really am. I’m excited to try to right this ship, and I’m all in.”
Allen, 31, is set to make about $7.56 million the rest of this season. A source close to the discussions told USA Today that Allen was willing to work with the Vikings in the situation was right. He has been a Viking for 10 years.
“I was never like borderline getting ready to go anywhere,” Allen said Wednesday. “The hoopla—I just went about my day as normal and again, my focus is the Cowboys. I was watching film (Tuesday).”
Allen has 4-1/2 sacks through seven games.
FOLES STARTING FOR EAGLES
In the most obvious headline of the day, Nick Foles will start for the Eagles Sunday.
Foles was cleared to play after sustaining a concussion two weeks ago. Michael Vick, who has a bad hamstring pull, is probably having a hard time touching his toes. And Matt Barkley…well, he isn’t the answer.
Thankfully, Foles isn’t a bad answer for the Eagles, who haven’t scored an offensive touchdown since Week 6 against Tampa Bay. The offense has scored three points in the last two weeks.
HUFF, SPEARS CUT
The Baltimore Ravens, treading water at 3-4 in their Super Bowl defense and coming out of a bye week, delivered on a promised shake-up Wednesday morning by waiving two of their bigger offseason signees, safety Michael Huff and defensive end Marcus Spears.
Huff, signed as a free agent after seven years in Oakland and expected to take over for Ed Reed at free safety, lost his starting job to first-round pick Matt Elam after the opening-night loss in Denver featuring Peyton Manning’s seven touchdown passes. He was relegated to special teams almost exclusively, and in their last game before the bye, the Ravens lost in Pittsburgh on a last-play field goal set up by a 44-yard kickoff return on which Huff admitted he lost containment.
The Ravens had gotten Huff at a bargain price, a reported $6 million over three years, after he had been released by the Raiders in the offseason.
Spears, who had played defensive end for nine years with the Cowboys before signing with the Ravens, began the season with a chance for serious playing time on the line with Arthur Jones recovering from a viral infection. But he never capitalized on it, was nagged by injuries, started only one game and had just 10 tackles before being let go. He also underperformed on special teams, a specific point of emphasis as the Ravens went on their bye.
The Ravens stood pat at the trade deadline, but made it clear less than a day later that they were not remaining complacent. To replace Huff and Spears on the roster, they signed safeties Brynden Trawick and Omar Brown from the practice squad. Trawick had briefly been on the active roster earlier this season.
Baltimore is in second in the AFC North behind 6-2 Cincinnati; the Ravens play at Cleveland (3-5) Sunday.
JON SANDUSKY PLEADS GUILTY
Cleveland Browns executive Jon Sandusky has pleaded guilty to refusing a chemical test when he was pulled over last month for suspicion of drunken driving in Fargo.
Sandusky, 36, received a suspended sentence Tuesday in Fargo Municipal Court and was placed on unsupervised probation that requires him to complete a chemical dependency evaluation, defense attorney Mark Friese said Wednesday.
The sentence should be wiped off Sandusky's record if he doesn't break any more laws. The DUI charge was dismissed.
"Jon is genuinely sorry for the incident," Friese told The Associated Press. "He takes full responsibility for his actions and he's glad to put this matter behind him."
Court documents in the case were not available Wednesday.
Police say Sandusky, the director of player personnel for the Browns, was pulled over for making an illegal turn in the early morning hours of Oct. 8 near the city's downtown. Police say he crossed over three lanes of traffic to make the turn.
Officers determined Sandusky was driving under the influence after administering field sobriety tests.
PATTERSON FREE ON BOND
The man charged with killing the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has bonded out of a South Dakota jail.
The Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls says 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson is no longer housed there.
His attorney, Tim Rensch, confirmed Patterson's release and says there are no conditions on it. But Rensch says Patterson plans to stay in the area and defend himself.
Patterson's bond was reduced to $750,000 on Monday, so he had to post $75,000.
He's charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the death of Tyrese Robert Ruffin. Patterson is the boyfriend of Tyrese's mother.
Peterson had just recently found out that Tyrese was his son.
