The gunfire erupted in W.C. Patton Park, where a large crowd of people had gathered to celebrate Easter, at around 7 p.m., AL.com reported.

A 32-year-old woman was pronounced dead in the back of a vehicle and the wounded victims—aged 4, 15, 16, 17 and 21—were transported to hospital and are in stable condition, Sgt. Rod Mauldin, with the Birmingham Police Department, told reporters.

The name of the slain woman and those who were injured were not immediately released. Mauldin said the woman was an innocent bystander.

An eyewitness told AL.com that there had been around 1,000 people in the park on Sunday evening when someone opened fire, striking a blue Dodge Charger and two women who were sitting on top of it.

One of the women was the 32-year-old who died, the witness said.

According to the witness, one person opened fire and then several others started shooting in different directions.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation in the park between a group of men, Mauldin said.

No suspects were in custody as of late Sunday night, and Mauldin urged witnesses to come forward with any information.

“This park was full of people, full of families, and we know people saw things,’’ he said.

“We need people to come forward with any information you have concerning this incident. No matter how big or small you think it is, it’s valuable to us tonight. We need descriptions. We need names.”

He added: “This was a park full of people and there were several children in the park tonight.”

The shooting came just two weeks after the Birmingham Police Department put out a Public Service Announcement (PSA) video featuring local children and teenagers demanding adults take action to end gun violence to protect their futures.

Mauldin told reporters that such violence is “frustrating” for the community.

“People want to come out to our parks and have a good time, enjoy their families,’’ he said. “This incident right here just shows we have a lot of work to do.”

The Birmingham Police Department has been contacted for additional comment.
