In honor of her birthday festivities, Twitter users have joined in on the celebration by sharing GIFS, photos, and concert footage. Even famous singers, such as Boy George and Nancy Sinatra, have popped up on social media to send her birthday greetings. Sinatra stated, “That face! That face! Happy birthday, gorgeous! I’m so glad our paths cross now and then.”
Chris Stein, co-founder and guitarist of the ’80s new wave band, shared numerous photos from his archives. In the black and white picture, Harry can be seen with the iconic comedian, Mel Brooks, from four years ago.
This Wednesday afternoon, @BlondieOfficial tweeted about their one day sale, “It’s a birthday celebration. In honor of Debbie’s birthday, enjoy 40% off the entire online store until 11:59 pm EST tonight.”
No Regrets
Last year, the 74-year-old rock star went into detail as she revisited past events for her recent autobiography, Face It. According to The New York Times, British rock journalist Sylvie Simmons put together the memoir from interviews with the Parallel Lines artist. In her memoir, Harry stated, “I don’t like to dwell on the past. You do something, if you’re lucky you learn from it, and you move on.”
In the book’s pages, Harry mentioned the obstacles she faced during the past. During the early ’80s, she took care of Stein after he felt sick from an autoimmune disease. Not only did the former couple face financial woes, their band had split as well. Though Harry and Stein broke up five years later, the Blondie singer does look back at their relationship in a “romanticized light.” She added, “We actually made one great person.”
When asked about her current love life, Harry admitted, “I usually just say that I’m up for grabs, but I date. I have a couple of really great friendships, one in particular, but I don’t want to talk about that.”
After dealing with personal losses and financial struggles, Harry looks back and regrets almost nothing. She jokingly said, “The only thing I regret is I can’t wear heels anymore.”
Motherhood
Also last year, Harry discussed motherhood by Inews. When asked if she wanted children, she said, “Not until recently. I really didn’t see myself doing it, but now I feel I’m capable and I could actually do it.
“Honestly, I was so self-centered, it never crossed my mind. I was amazed that anyone would want to have a child,“added Harry. “I was so traumatized in a way by the things that happened to us, I don’t know if I could have taken a child through it.”
Ageism
About four years ago, Harry did confess to having fears about losing her looks. She discussed growing old with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. She admitted, “It’s rough. I’m trying my best now. I’m healthy and I exercise like a fiend and do all that stuff that recovered drug addicts do.”
While talking about her “radical experiences in life,” Harry continued, “Am I still imbibing? No, I’ve run the gamut. For me, it turned into not so much fun, it just wears thin. I was one of those idiots who thought they were going to live forever.”
A representative for the rock star has not responded to Newsweek’s request for comment.
