“I don’t go checking on my players. They’re 18-22 years old. No (bed checks),” Ryan explained. “They also want to play on a team that’s successful, and they don’t want to let the team down.”

Wisconsin has reached the NCAA Tournament in every year under Ryan and has won at least 20 games in 12 of his 14 seasons in Madison.

He credits his staff for finding players with the right character and keeping the message consistent.

“I never have to worry about what I said to a young man when I recruited him and bring him in,” Ryan said. “I don’t have to go to an assistant and say, ‘How many minutes a game did we promise this guy?’ I’ve never done any of that. Every player that comes in here realizes they have to work to be able to get on the floor.”
