“Bravo has ceased filming with Jennie Nguyen and she will no longer be a cast member of ‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.’ We recognize we failed to take appropriate action once her offensive social media posts were brought to our attention,” Bravo said in a statement posted to Twitter.
The statement continued, “Moving forward, we will work to improve our processes to ensure we make better informed and more thoughtful casting decisions.”
The announcement by Bravo comes shortly after Nguyen faced criticism for many for previous social media posts about the BLM movement and death of George Floyd, who was killed by former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin last year. According to People magazine, many of the posts, which have since been deleted, were critical of the BLM movement.
In an Instagram post last week, Nguyen apologized for the posts and said, “at the time, I thought I was speaking out against violence, but I have since learned how offensive and hurtful my words were.”
The post continued, “It’s why I deactivated that account more than a year ago and why I continue to try to learn about the perspectives different from my own. I regret those posts and am sincerely sorry for the pain they caused.”
Shortly after the posts resurfaced, Nguyen’s Real Housewives of Salt Lake City co-star Meredith Marks issued a response on social media, where she said that she was “sickened” by the posts.
“I do not stand behind or support these posts in any way, share, or form. I stand with and support the communities affected and targeted by this. I am deeply disturbed and outraged by her actions. Black Lives Matter,” Marks wrote. “You will see repercussions. As difficult as it is, give things a moment to come to light. Know that I do not support this behavior in anyway and will continue using my platform to speak out against it.”
Another one of Nguyen’s co-stars, Jen Shah, also issued a statement in response to the recent controversy.
“I am deeply offended by the racially insensitive posts and comments,” Shah wrote in an Instagram post. “It was infuriating to see her like and repost comments that made a mockery of and showed complete apathy toward those killed marching to bring awareness to the deep-seeded [sic] social justice issues that plague our country.”
Newsweek reached out to a representative for Nguyen for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.
