Over 8 million people have watched the viral clip of the moment on TikTok since it was shared by wedding guest @amyjcode on November 14. The video has racked up 1.7 million likes, at the time of writing and more than 7,400 comments.

In the video, the bride, Natalie Porter, 28, and groom AJ, 30, smile as they walk out of their ceremony, surrounded by happy guests who toss confetti. But Natalie is also hit with something small after “someone thought you were supposed to chuck the sugared almonds,” as the caption reads. The video cuts to laughing guests watching someone picking the almonds off the ground.

Newsweek spoke to actress Natalie who got hitched on November 12 at a Greek Orthodox church in Sydney, Australia.

“The “pelting” didn’t really hurt, I just felt confused and shocked, as I did not know what was being thrown at us or why. I know who threw the koufeta and they meant absolutely no harm, it was just her way of trying to bless us,” she told Newsweek.

At Greek weddings, the Jordan almonds are known as koufeta and are given as favors typically at Italian and Greek weddings. In Italy, Jordan almonds are actually called confetti, so it’s plausible that the guest could have been confused if the bag was labeled so.

Jordan almonds are given out at weddings because “fresh almonds have a bittersweet taste, which is supposed to represent life; the sugar-coating adds the hope that the newlyweds’ life will be more sweet than bitter. Even the shape of the candy has meaning. Some believe the egg shape is an aphrodisiac, while others say the egg shape is a sign of fertility,” according to the wedding website The Knot.

“In traditional Greek weddings, Jordan almonds are called Koufeta. They’re placed in little bags in odd numbers and served on a silver tray. The odd-numbered almonds symbolize that the newlyweds will share everything and remain undivided,” The Knot explained.

“Another Greek Jordan almonds wedding tradition is if an unmarried woman puts the almonds under her pillow, she’ll dream of her future husband,” whereas “five almonds signify five wishes for the couple: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity” at an Italian wedding.

The comical moment has left the internet in stitches.

One TikTok user received more than 43,200 likes after commenting: “THE SILENT CROWD AND THE BELL, THE SUGARED ALMOND COLLECTOR, THE CRYING.”

“The bride probably thought someone was throwing rocks at her,” another TikTok user commented.

“Did they just think people were going to pelt the newlyweds??” questioned another user, who racked up 12,000 likes.

“To their defense, they do kinda look like a safe alternative to giving birds rice,” said one commenter.

While the peak wedding season may be over, hilarious moments from celebrations are still being shared online. Earlier this month, a video went viral showing a woman trying on a wedding dress for her identical twin. She told Newsweek that it was so she could get a “better idea” of how she will look on her wedding day from different angles.
