Mercedes, who will start the weekend 40 points behind Ferrari, have won eight of the past nine editions of this particular race, including victories for Lewis Hamilton on all but one occasion since 2014.
Hamilton secured third place in Montreal last time out, a place ahead of teammate George Russell in a reversal of their results in Baku a week earlier.
Max Verstappen won both of those races and is 46 points clear of teammate Sergio Perez, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc three further back in the drivers’ standings.
