The British Open, the final of the four major championships on the 2019 calendar, takes place from Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, and if it’s anything like the first three majors, the quest for the Claret Jug shouldn’t disappoint.
The lone major that takes place outside of the United States, the links style United Kingdom courses provide a challenge not often seen on the PGA Tour.
This will be the second time Royal Portrush has hosted the British Open and first since 1951. At 16 years old, a young Rory McIlroy set the Old Course record by shooting a 61.

Tiger Woods will be playing in his first PGA Tour event since a disappointing performance at the U.S. Open. The Masters champion will be among three golfers looking to win their second major of the year, a list that also includes Brooks Koepka (PGA Championship) and Gary Woodland (U.S. Open). Koepka (2018), Jordan Spieth (2015) and McIlroy (2014) are the only golfers to win two majors in a calendar year this decade.
Many eyes will also be on defending 2018 champion Francesco Molinari, who has yet to win on the PGA Tour this year, although he challenged Woods at Augusta. With a win, Molinari would be the first golfer to repeat as British Open champion since Padraig Harrington in 2008.

Like most tournaments, Golf Channel will exclusively broadcast the tournament in the United States during the first two days, providing over 14 hours of coverage on both Thursday and Friday. It will also have the beginning of Saturday and Saturday, with the tournament wrapping up on NBC for both days. Dan Hicks and Paul Azinger will make up the primary broadcast team on NBC, while Mike Tirico, Terry Gannon and Nick Faldo will also provide coverage. Who else is in the British Open field?
The top 31 players in the World Golf Rankings will all be a part of the field, most notably Woods, Koepka and McIlroy, as well as Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Bryson DeChambeau. The field also features 19 of the top 20 players in the FedEx Cup standings. Among them are Matt Kuchar and Xander Schauffele, who have each won two PGA Tour events this year.
Defending champion Molinari will be among the former winners playing, which also includes Tom Lehman (1996) and Paul Lawrie (1999), who won over 20 years ago, and more recent victors Henrik Stenson (2016) and Jordan Spieth (2017).

British Open purse, prize money
The British Open purse comes out to $10.75 million, with the winner earning a cool $1,935,000 — 18 percent of the total purse. The purse increased from its total of $10,500,000 last year, while Molinari collected $1.44 million for his win in 2018. It is still the smallest of the four majors, however.
The U.S. Open is the largest at $12.5 million, while the Masters and PGA Championship both amount to $11 million.
Odds to win the British Open
The golfers with the four best odds are among the top five in the World Golf Rankings, and all 10 who check in at +2500 or better are ranked in the top 20. McIlroy’s longstanding relationship with Royal Portrush and overall familiarity with links-style golf make him an early favorite, while Koepka and Johnson have generally struggled more with British Open courses compared to the other majors.

British Open past winners
The British Open’s rich history dates back all the way back to 1860, when Willie Park Sr. won over an eight-man field at Prestwick Golf Club, which hosted the first 12 tournaments. Old Tom Morris holds the record for largest winning margin (13 strokes), a mark that has been untouched since 1862.
Harry Vardon holds the record for most British Open victories (6), and Peter Thomson and Tom Watson are among the group of golfers who have hoisted the Claret Jug five times. Woods (2000, 2005, 2006) is the only golfer with three-plus British Open victories in this year’s field.
