The 15-time major winner begins the final major of the season at 3:10 p.m. local time (10:10 a.m. ET), almost nine hours after Darren Clarke hits the first tee shot of the tournament at Royal Portrush Golf Club, Northern Ireland.

In theory, playing in the afternoon should be more comfortable for Woods, who has struggled when facing unseasonably cold weather at the last two majors.

Rain and winds are expected throughout the weekend at Portrush, with temperatures forecast to be in the 50s to low 60s range.

The wait should also give Woods, who will play alongside 2018 Masters winner Patrick Reed and England’s Matt Wallace, some insight over the course’s behavior.

The only golf course outside England and Scotland to have ever hosted the Open Championship, the last time Portrush welcomed the oldest major in the world was 1951.

The Dunluce Links course was extensively renovated in 2015, with two new holes introduced—the seventh and the eighth—while the original 17th and 18th were removed.

In its current configuration, the Dunluce Links is a 7,340-yard, par-71 course, which has the fewest bunkers of any course on The Open rota.

Familiarity with the course is a luxury few in the field are afforded and Woods had not set foot in Portrush until Sunday. However, he was left impressed by what he saw in the practice rounds.

“It’s such a great venue,” he told BBC Sport.

“Everyone who’s played it, whether it’s guys who grew up here or people who have come up here and just played, they’ve always enjoyed it.

“I can understand why. It’s straightforward. It is tricky a little bit here and there, but overall it’s just a wonderful links golf course.”

On Thursday, coverage of the first round begins at 1:30 a.m. ET on Golf Channel runs until 4 p.m. ET.

Odds

Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka are the men to beat at Portrush this week. According to VegasInsider, the former is an 8/1 favorite, while the latter is a 10/1 shot.

At 16/1, Tiger Woods is joint-third favorite alongside Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson.
