DeChambeau is one of LIV Golf’s most well-known players; he joined the upstart golf league in June after months of speculation that he would leave the PGA Tour. This week, he will play in his first LIV Golf tournament.
On Tuesday, he expounded on his decision to join LIV Golf, saying that he made a business decision to try to better his community with the money he’s receiving.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of LIV Golf’s stateside debut outside Portland, Ore., DeChambeau further explained his decision to join the Saudi-funded series.

And also give me more time to rest — the ability to have weeks off and recover my body the way I want to so that I can be prepared to give it my all when it comes time. Not be depleted every week and continue to get depleted over the course of time.
And the last part is, I saw that event in London and I saw how much fun everyone was having. That was exciting to me, and I wanted to be a part of something like that.
DeChambeau was upfront about his decision to join LIV Golf prior to the 2022 U.S. Open, with a straightforward answer of “money” as his reason.
Later in the press conference, DeChambeau said that doesn’t exactly see the connection between the Saudi funding and the role of the golfers in the field, saying that his primary goal is to entertain.
He continued:
DeChambeau signed a contract with LIV Golf reportedly worth more than $100 million over four years. He finished tied for 56th at the 2022 U.S. Open.
I think moving on from that is important, and going, continuing to move forward in a positive light is something that can be a force for good for the future of the game.
