Team physican Brian Cole, the same doctor who performed Rose's ACL surgery, completed the procedure at Rush Hospital in Chicago.

Rose hurt his knee on Friday night in the Bulls' game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Cutting down the right sideline, Rose was reaching for a backdoor pass when he was injured.

At the time of the injury, Rose immediately limped toward the bench and did not return to the game. He left Portland's Moda Center on crutches that night.

Rose's decision to have the medial meniscus reattched is a long-term approach that requires a longer rehab time. Officially out of the season, Rose has now played only 50 games in the past three years. He dealt with small injuries through most of 2011-12 before suffering the ACL injury and missed all of last year. He played only 10 games this season before suffering this most recent injury.

Without Rose, the Bulls should be able to contend with the lower-tier teams in the East, but all hopes of challenging the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers is essentially lost. When Rose returns, he could come back to a different time, since his injury has accelerated the Bulls' plan to attempt to trade forward Luol Deng, who becomes a free agent this summer.

Before the Bulls' Sunday loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Bulls coach Tom Thiboideau said he believed the team still had enough to win. In the backcourt, they will play Kirk Hinrich and Marquis Teague in Rose's place.

Rose averaged 15.9 points, 4.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds before suffering a season-ending injury.

GASOL'S RECOVERY

Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol says he will have to be off his sprained left knee for three to four weeks before he can begin rehab.

Gasol sustained a grade two sprain of the medial collateral ligament in a game against San Antonio on Friday night. He said Monday that he will try to fast-track his return but there is no timetable until the team sees how he responds to treatment.

Some estimates have Gasol missing as much as two months. Kosta Koufos, obtained in an offseason trade with the Nuggets is expected to fill most of Gasol's minutes.

The 7-foot-1 Spaniard ranks second on the Grizzlies in scoring rebounds and assists.

NETS' WOES

There's a lot of bad basketball being played in New York at the moment, and the Brooklyn Nets are well aware of the part they play in that hideous display.

The Nets' record went to 3-10 after they lost, 109-97, in a Sunday afternoon game to the Detroit Pistons. Afterward, Kevin Garnett sounded off on the loss — and the overall direction of the Nets — on behalf of his team.

“I think everybody here is embarrassed,” Garnett said. “You definitely don’t want [to be booed] at home. Like I’ve been saying, we’re going to continue to work to try to change this as best we can.”

One thing worth changing is the Nets' third-quarter effort, which has been their undoing in this early-season struggle. The Nets have been outscored by 96 points in the quarter, losing the points advantage there in each of their 10 losses, as ESPNNewYork.com pointed out.

“I have no clue [why that’s been happening],” Joe Johnson said. “It’s been repetitive, and it’s kind of been a tale of our season. The third quarter, it doesn’t matter if we’re up or down, we get no lift.”

T-WOLVES TRADING WILLIAMS

Derrick Williams has been the subject of trade rumors practically since the Timberwolves drafted him with the second overall pick in 2011.

After so many false starts, and unable to find playing time this season behind Kevin Love, Williams is finally on his way out.

The Wolves have agreed to trade him to the Kings for Luc Mbah a Moute, two people with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Monday night.

The people requested anonymity because neither team has officially announced the deal, which will be finalized on Tuesday if Mbah a Moute passes a physical.

Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said he also had no knowledge of the deal.

"You better call Sacramento because I have no idea," Adelman said after Minnesota's 98-84 loss to the Pacers. "We're talking about the game, I have no idea where that came from. I'm not dealing with any trade talk or anything else, you know, I have no idea. I haven't talked to anybody."

Williams came to the Wolves from Arizona as the highest draft choice in franchise history. But he never was able to carve a niche in Adelman's rotation and it became increasingly clear early this season that he had no role on the Timberwolves. Williams is averaging 4.9 points in under 15 minutes per game this season.

Mbah a Moute is averaging 4.4 points and 3.0 rebounds in nine games for the Kings this season.
