MORE: Sports recognizing tragedy | School prematurely celebrates state title
No deaths were reported by The Indianapolis Star, though Griffith High School will have to postpone its 3A semi-state matchup at Marion High School after its bus overturned on Interstate-65. No players escaped without injury, however.
Griffith coach Gary Hayes was among those injured by the bus crash; he suffered a cut on his head. He confirmed all players on the bus received at least some sort of injury, saying, “Everyone has something.”
Hayes said the crash was a result of someone hitting the bus from the side. The driver tried to correct, but the bus took a second hit, causing it to flip over into a ditch.
The Indiana High School Athletic Association will try to work out a makeup date between Griffith and Marion.
